Oakland to pay $400K over 49ers fan's broken arm
OAKLAND, Calif.—The city of Oakland has agreed to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit by a football fan whose arm was broken during a police crackdown at an Oakland Raiders game. Raymond Castillo was attending an exhibition game between the Raiders and San Francisco 49ers in August 2008 when a fight broke out two rows away from him.
According to the lawsuit, Officer Bryant Ocampo responded to the fight and tackled Castillo even though Castillo wasn't part of the brawl. During the incident, the Newark man's left arm was forcefully bent behind his back, snapping his elbow.
Castillo's attorney told the San Francisco Chronicle that he works as a plumber and lost a year of work because of the arm injury.
City officials agreed Tuesday to pay him a $412,500 settlement.
